If you would like to join ECHO at NYU Langone Health, you can reach out to the study team by emailing us at [email protected] or calling us at 855-698-2437.
With many participants throughout the United States, your participation will help researchers answer important child health questions. Some key questions are related to how the environment affects:
-
Pregnant people’s and babies’ health before, during, and after pregnancy
-
Children’s breathing problems and breathing-related illnesses
-
Nutrition, physical activity, risks of becoming overweight, and weight-related illnesses
-
Brain development, including the ability to think and understand, social development, speech, attention, behavior, and emotions
-
Overall health and well-being
ECHO consists of about 50 ECHO Study Sites across the United States. Our ECHO Study Site is located at NYU Langone Health. You are eligible to join our ECHO Study Site at NYU Langone Health if you are a:
-
Pregnant person enrolled at less than 20 weeks of pregnancy, seeking prenatal care at NYU Langone Health
-
Child that is either:
-
Born to a pregnant person enrolled in ECHO at NYU Langone Health, or
-
Previously enrolled in ECHO at NYU Langone Health.
-
-
Primary caregiver (such as the Biological Mother or a Non-Biological Parent) of the child (or children) enrolled in ECHO at NYU Langone Health.
The ECHO Program's mission is to enhance the health of children for generations to come.
The ECHO Data Analysis Center will maintain information in secure databases for research only. The ECHO Data Analysis Center will store your and your child's address and contact information separate from other research information and samples. We will keep all information and samples in locked rooms or cabinets or in secure computer systems.

Yes! If you invite others to join ECHO at NYU Langone Health, they can reach the study team by emailing us at [email protected] or calling us at 855-698-2437.
ECHO will last at least until 2030, and may continue after that.
ECHO will contact participants twice during pregnancy, and around the time the child is born to complete study activities. ECHO will contact participants twice before the child's first birthday, then each year to complete surveys, study visits, or provide samples. The amount of time to complete these activities will take about one or two hours of your time and your child's time each time we contact you.
Yes, you will receive compensation for being in the study.
The United States is large and diverse. This means that ECHO researchers need to have a large and diverse set of information to get a good understanding of child health across the entire country. ECHO plans to include more than 50,000 children and families in its research!
The ECHO Data Analysis Center will maintain secure databases with ECHO research information including addresses, dates of birth, dates of procedures and collections, and health information. Only the ECHO Data Analysis Center will access addresses that could identify you. For example, we may link information about your and your child’s samples and health to information about air or water quality where you live, work, or get childcare, or where your child lives or goes to school.
ECHO researchers can request access to research information and samples – including dates that could identify you and your child – so they can help answer questions about children’s health.
From time to time, we will make study results available to all ECHO participants through the ECHO website, newsletters, community presentations, and scientific papers. These results will not be specific to any individual person in ECHO, including you and your child.
We will ask for information (including dates of birth and addresses) and samples like saliva, blood, or hair.
The information and samples we collect will be different each time we contact you and as the child gets older.
We will collect information and samples in person, through phone calls, mail, online surveys, or other ways.
Yes, you or your child can leave the study at any time. You or your child may also decide not to give certain samples or not to answer certain questions.
The United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports this study.
By agreeing for you and your child to take part in ECHO, you allow us to share your and your child's information and samples with qualified researchers within and outside ECHO.
ECHO may help us learn things about health and well-being that could benefit children—including your children and grandchildren—in the years to come.
Taking part in ECHO will not improve your or your child’s health right now nor will it change anything about your or your child’s current medical care.
You and your child will not receive medical care or other direct benefits from being in the study.
By being part of this study, you and your child will help answer questions about how to improve the health of children.
Providing information and samples for this study is low risk. This means any discomfort you and your child might experience in the study is small and is similar to what either of you could experience in daily life or during a routine doctor’s visit.
You or your child may have pain and bruising from a needle prick when collecting a blood sample.
You or your child may feel uncomfortable answering questions about things like stressful events.
Your and your child’s privacy and confidentiality are very important to us. As with all research studies, there is a possible risk of loss of confidentiality. This means someone might see information that identifies you or your child when they do not have permission. Also, it is possible that in the future someone could figure out how to use the health or genetic information to identify individuals or their close biological relatives. The risk of this happening is very small, but may grow in the future.
If you have additional questions, you can reach out to the study team by emailing us at [email protected] or calling us at 855-698-2437.
