About the Study

The Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program is a research program supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) whose mission is to enhance the health of children for generations to come.

The goal of the ECHO Program is to understand the effects of a broad range of early environmental influences on child health and development. ECHO is dedicated to both learning what factors affect child health and to finding ways to enhance it.

Who is eligible to join ECHO?

ECHO consists of about 50 ECHO Study Sites across the United States. Our ECHO Study Site is located at NYU Langone Health. You are eligible to join our ECHO Study Site at NYU Langone Health if you are a:

  • Pregnant person enrolled at less than 20 weeks of pregnancy, seeking prenatal care at NYU Langone Health

  • Child that is either:

    • Born to a pregnant person enrolled in ECHO, or

    • Previously enrolled in ECHO.

  • Primary caregiver (such as the Biological Mother or a Non-Biological Parent) of the child (or children) enrolled in ECHO

What is involved?

We will ask for information (including dates of birth and addresses) and samples like saliva, blood, or hair.

The information and samples we collect will be different each time we contact you and as the child gets older.

We will collect information and samples in person, through phone calls, mail, online surveys, or other ways.

Why should I join?

The ECHO Program consists of research that need participants like you.

The United States is large and diverse. This means that ECHO researchers need to have a large and diverse set of information to get a good understanding of child health across the entire country. ECHO plans to include more than 50,000 children and families in its research!

People who are taking part in ECHO research are called “participants.” Participants in ECHO research are important and valuable. Their health information helps researchers answer key questions about ECHO’s five focus areas in child health:

By taking part in ECHO, participants help create a big-picture view of what influences child health in the United States. This information will help ECHO researchers find answers to important questions. Participants are essential to achieving ECHO’s mission of enhancing the health of our nation’s children.
